Ah, the divine joys of Maine weather. What Summer gives us in beauty, Winter just snatches back in bitter. Currently, we are enjoying a deep freeze. (I chose the term “enjoying” because at no other time of the year are we thrilled to reach a high of 12 degrees.) Yes, here we are in a pipe-bursting, face-stinging, “you’ve got to pee sometime, dog” stretch of subzero temperatures that makes 20 degrees and sunny feels like a heat wave. And did I mention snow? We have a shit ton of snow, too, with more on the way.

I have two choices: 1) go crazy thinking about the cold, or 2) get busy thinking about something productive. Door Number 2, please. When Mother Nature gives you snow, make snow people!

It’s been a few years since I’ve made a snowman. Okay, decades. With that in mind, I figured I’d start with the classic Frosty version. While a fair first attempt, I felt something wasn’t right in the poor guy’s face. I mean, look at him. He seems about as uncomfortable with snow up his butt as I would. What’s wrong here? Then it hit me in the middle of the night. “…and two eyes made out of coal…” Damn you, Pinterest. It isn’t buttons for eyes, it’s coal! No wonder that poor snowman looks so jangled. Ah well, coal isn’t exactly something I have on hand. Snowman 2.0 will be more zen, I promise.

And about that carrot…

I thought Lemmy might sit beside Frosty for a quick shot. Nothin’ doin’. The pug had that carrot yanked out of Frosty’s frozen little face and in his belly before I could yell “NO!” or say Jack Frost. It’s all fun and games until someone loses a nose…

Stay warm! -Ann
